It does not matter how slow you go so long as you do not stop.

10 Good Reasons to Start Sewing

Back in the day, sewing was thought of as an old lady’s job. But thanks to DIY projects, the practice of sewing is coming back. If you haven’t gotten around to sewing, there are plenty of reasons for you to start.

1. It relieves stress.

Focusing on a single task (such as trying to sew straight using a sewing machine) can actually be a good way to wind down after a long and stressful today. It helps calm you down and ease your mind, but at the same time, you’re still being productive. Just don’t tire yourself out by doing more projects than you can handle in a day.

2. It’s one way to spend quality time with the family.

What better way to start sewing than getting the entire family involved? You can try coming up with a project together with your daughters; start with something simple - how about sewing on missing buttons on your clothes? Once you have them hooked, you can move on to something more ambitious - sewing new pillow covers, making your own clothes, etc.

3. It allows you to get your creative juices flowing.

You can do whatever project tickles your fancy, provided you have the materials to do so. If you’re thinking about redesigning all your clothes, go ahead. The great thing about sewing is that you can come up with many different projects, so you’ll never get bored.

4. It can help you save money.

Instead of buying new clothes, how about trying to make your own? There’s so much you can do even with an old plain t-shirt. Many DIY blogs can help you out with this one just in case you’re unsure of what to do. You can even alter your clothes instead of paying to have them altered. Overtime, you’ll realize you’re spending less than what you used to.

5. And, it can help you make money as well.

This can be your goal in the long run. Once you get the hang of sewing and you’re skills have improved, you could consider starting a business. If you’ve done a couple of DIY projects involving clothes, how about going the extra mile and sell them? If business is good, you can branch out and include other products such as bags and scarves.

6. It has health benefits.

A study sponsored by the HSA showed that sewing (whether you’re a professional or beginner) helps reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, allowing you to relax while being productive.

7. It allows you to make your own clothes.

This benefit can’t be stressed enough. If you’ve been frustrated because of a dress that doesn’t fit right or a shirt that doesn’t quite fit your expectations, you can actually take matters into your own hands - literally.

8. It provides many learning opportunities.

There’s an endless list of the things you can learn when it comes to sewing. The different types of stitches don’t begin to cover the vast world of sewing. There are a lot of techniques you have to learn and even when you’re through with one, there’s another challenge coming your way.

9. It makes a great hobby.

Everyone needs a hobby, and sewing will definitely keep you busy even during the most idle days. As I’ve repeatedly mentioned, it’s a productive hobby, and you’ll feel pretty good about yourself with every project you accomplish.

10. It’s something to be passionate about.

Nothing helps you become more self confident than doing a good job at something you’re passionate about. Every sewing project is a job well done.

Top 10 Sewing Tips for Beginners

Watching Project Runway week after week peaked my interest in sewing again. For some reason, I enjoyed my sewing classes back when I was studying. I was probably one of a handful who did not ask their mother or seamstress to finish their projects for them. Buoyed by the prospect of creative work, I set out to revisit my old favorite pastime. What follows are the top ten sewing tips for beginners I have learned through trial and error that I hope will help you too.

This is a new skill that you are attempting to learn so there are bound to be some challenges. Manage your expectations. There would probably be improvements on the sewing machine that you need to learn again. Patience is a virtue, stock up on it.

Gather your sewing tools first before beginning any project. The most important tool would be the sewing machine. I would suggest that you get the best machine you can afford. Don’t discount buying a previously loved machine. Just make sure that it is still in good running condition.

The best sewing tip I learned from my teacher was to master pattern drafting. This is the most overlooked part of sewing because a lot of people find the measuring and cutting tedious work. But a good pattern is like a good map - it will lead you to the right direction.

Don’t stop learning. Do your research well. Talk to other sewing aficionados or visit sewing blogs. Experience is still the best teacher, so learn from your own as well as that of others. There is no need to reinvent the wheel.

The steamer or the iron is your best friend. It is easier to create when the fabric is crisp and not bunched up. Working with well-pressed fabric usually gives me the energy to finish my creation.

To keep your interest in sewing, work with good fabric, preferably something that you love. Most of the time, the fabric is the focal point of your creation. The simplicity of the design can be covered up by the beauty of the fabric. As you become better, know the characteristics of different kinds of fabrics and work with it. There’s a wealth of information online that you can explore.

Aside from fabric, you should also invest in good quality threads. They literally hold the fabric together, so shop around for the best kind.

To get better, just practice, practice, practice. There are so many things you can make with your sewing machine. Not only will it be cheaper in the long run, you will also get the satisfaction of owning a unique item.

Don’t Get Into Trouble With Self Defense Techniques

Many people are asking “how does self defense work?” and “is it self defense if…?” These are common questions we hear all the time because the line that separates self defense from assault/fighting is so thin and easy to accidentally cross over with devastating consequences.

This article will teach a few of the important aspects of what self defense is, where it begins, and what you can do to protect yourself.

Are You Emotionally and Psychologically Prepared?

Being emotionally and psychologically prepared is an absolute must when it comes to proper self defense. You need to have this area handled before thinking about any type of physical training or conditioning.

In order for you to respond properly in the event of an attack or confrontation, you need to be ready and prepared psychologically. You need to fully understand and accept that physical danger, in the form of an attack by another person, can happen anywhere and anytime. This mental preparation is the first step towards a good defense.

Jail cell

Another part of being mentally prepared is to understand that effective self defense involves more than just learning moves and tactics. A lot of martial arts classes train you how to respond to a real threat situation, but the training does not induce the same stress/emotions that come up during a real threat.

Until you’re able to understand how your body responds in a real life situation, it’s easy to over/under utilize what you’ve been taught. This can lead to deadly injuries inflicted either on you or the attacker along with a host of other legal problems.

Illegal Fighting or Self Defense?

Not knowing how to properly utilize your martial arts or self defense training is a quick way to end up getting sued or worse, thrown in jail.

Learn more about how to defend yourself effectively if you find yourself in a real street fight: Street Fighting Uncaged Review

Understanding Street Fighting Techniques

Street fighting can be viewed as a fighting style that’s aimed more at self defense than anything else. It has nothing to do with participating in competitions or winning championship titles. A lot of people mistaken street fighting as just another form of fighting, but street fighting is basically fighting without any restrictions, often for self preservation. Learning how to street fight is essential when it comes to being prepared against possible physical attacks.

Imagine you’re walking alone late at night and suddenly an attacker pops out of nowhere and threatens your life. What do you do? If he has weapons, you usually have no choice but to surrender. However, if you are well versed in street fighting, you can look for opportunities where his guard is down and attempt to disarm him before he even realizes what’s going on. Most of the time it’s safer to just let the attacker take whatever he wants, even if you know how to street fight. However, knowing how to street fight comes in extremely handy when you are in a situation where your personal safety is at risk regardless if you submit or not.

There are many training courses and boot camps available that teach people how to defend themselves in emergency situations. Emergencies can happen at any time and any place. It’s always better to be aware of how to defend yourself than to expect others to help. You can’t always be traveling with someone and you won’t always be in populated areas. A training manual like Jeff Anderson’s Street Fighting Uncaged is an excellent way to learn how to improve your fighting skills if you do not wish to attend a class for it. Just remember that self defense is not all about fighting, and it begins long before anything physical happens.

Does Lifting Weights Increase Punching Power?

Having huge muscles have always been synonymous to having strong punching power. We have always believed that a man with large muscles can punch harder than an average built man. Lifting weights increases muscle mass and the size of skeletal muscles. But, does lifting weights increase punching power?

Weight lifting is a weight training that is focused on developing strength. Basically, lifting weights uses the force of gravity to oppose the force generated by your muscles. When we lift weights, we feel stronger because once we finish our lifting exercises, our muscles momentarily swell, making us look bigger and more muscular. But whenever you are lifting weights, you are only able to feel that you can be able to lift much more heavier equipment by continuously training. Punching is not about being able to lift your opponent easily. It is about generating enough force to slam your fists into something or someone.

Punching power is all about technique and practice of your punching form. Punching is about generating force, which means that a punch’s strength could be determined by mass multiplied by acceleration. Basically, this means that if you have huge hands and could snap or move your arm fast, you will be able to have a strong punching power. But, this is not always the case. A lot of variables affect the power of a punch. Your stance needs to be right, your feet need to be planted in a surface and keeping you balanced. A lot of boxer count on their footwork for balance, the momentum of their punches also start from the pivot motion of their feet going through their thighs and shoulders until it finally reaches their fist. This is the acceleration. Punching is also a snapping motion, this means that you need to be able to generate force in the least amount of time.
